As we wander through the cobblestone streets, we’ll soak in the historic atmosphere and admire the well-preserved medieval buildings that make Regensburg one of Germany’s most treasured cities. We’ll also cross the Stone Bridge, a remarkable 12th-century engineering feat that once served as the only way to traverse the Danube in this region.

About Regensburg
Regensburg is a historically important city where three rivers—the Danube, Naab, and Regen—meet, making it a key crossroads for trade and travel throughout the centuries. Before modern bridges, crossing large rivers was difficult, but in the 12th century, the construction of a stone bridge over the Danube helped Regensburg grow into a wealthy trade center.
Remarkably, the city’s Old Town suffered little damage during World War II, preserving its rich medieval architecture and historic charm. During the tour we visit the Brewery Museum to learn more about the making of beer and why it is so important for Czechs. Pilsen city also has a charming Old Town with the beautiful St Bartholomew Cathedral , Town Hall , and the stunning Great Synagogue that you will see as we walk around in Pilsen. You will have a chance to taste Pilsner Urquell , the world famous beer during lunch (not included).
About Pilsen
Pilsen is Czech Republic’s fourth largest city with a population of about 170 000 people. Growing around a castle, Pilsen becomes a city in the 13th century. The city grows in importance in the 19th century when many important industries are founded here during industrialization of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. Most famous of them is Škoda Works. Today Pilsen’s fame comes from its beer - Pilsner Urquell, its brewery was also founded in the 19th century.
We’ll walk up the hill to Karlštejn Castle, passing through a charming village before reaching the dramatic fortress and enjoying stunning countryside views.
What we'll do
We will walk up the hill to Karlštejn Castle’s courtyard. The castle sits on a steep hill and stays hidden from view until it suddenly appears high above you, creating a dramatic sight.
On the way up, we’ll pass through a small village at the base of the hill. The main road leading to the castle is lined with little shops and cafés, offering a great chance to take short breaks and enjoy the atmosphere.
Once we reach the top, we’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, making the climb well worth it.
About Karlštejn Castle
Karlštejn Castle, built in the 14th century by Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, was designed as a fortified treasury to safeguard the royal treasures, sacred relics, and the Bohemian Crown Jewels. Strategically perched atop a steep hill, the castle was intended not only as a secure stronghold but also as a place of spiritual retreat for the emperor.
One of the most important and famous castles in Czechia, Karlštejn is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, featuring massive fortifications, soaring towers, and beautifully decorated interiors. Among its highlights is the Chapel of the Holy Cross, once used to store the crown jewels and adorned with precious stones and stunning frescoes by Master Theodoric.
Walking through the castle’s courtyard feels like stepping back in time, as the medieval atmosphere, well-preserved structures, and breathtaking views over the countryside make Karlštejn a true historical gem and a must-visit site in Czechia.

She offered us a number of alternatives to see after informing us that the third stop, at Karlstejn Castle, had changed its opening hours for the season. The eight people on the tour all followed Petra‘s lead, and we weren’t disappointed. Lunch was at a nice restaurant on the main square in Pilsen, across from the cathedral. The ride was comfortable and the central drop-off location in Prague was a short walk to our hotel, in what is a truly walkable city. I will definitely take a side trip with this company on my next trip to Europe.

Petra picked us up from our hotel in the pouring rain in a spacious minivan for 5 people. Despite the rain Petra quickly made some minor adjustments to our itinerary and made sure we missed nothing. Regensburg and Pilsen are wonderful towns to visit to see rich examples of German and Czech history. Petra was wonderful and has lots of knowledge both historical and current. Would highly recommend we absolutely loved it.
