About Český Krumlov
Český Krumlov emerged as a thriving medieval town, growing around its strategically positioned castle. Built atop a hill overlooking a bend in the Vltava River, the castle controlled an important river crossing, which naturally encouraged trade and prosperity, leading to the town’s rapid development.
Over the centuries, Český Krumlov Castle has been rebuilt and expanded multiple times, blending Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles into a unique and harmonious complex. Today, visitors can trace these architectural transformations, each reflecting a different chapter of the town’s history.
Until the 20th century, Český Krumlov had a predominantly German population, but after World War II, the German inhabitants were expelled and replaced by Czech settlers. Today, the town is home to around 13,000 residents, preserving its rich history and fairy-tale charm as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most picturesque destinations in the Czechia.
